Body-fat estimates use the US Navy circumference method. Screening thresholds reference DoD Instruction 1308.03, Army Directive 2026-13, MARADMIN 066/26, and each branch’s published body-composition instruction. This is an independent educational tool.DoD Instruction 1308.03.

Frequently Asked Questions

Effective January 1, 2026, the DoD replaced height-and-weight tables with a waist-to-height ratio screen. You pass the initial screen if WHtR is below 0.55 (the Marine Corps uses ≤ 0.52). This tool computes your WHtR and flags the pass/fail screen for your selected branch.

DoD Directive 1308.3 & Service Branch Body Composition Standards

All branches of the United States Armed Forces—the U.S. Army (AR 600-9), U.S. Navy (OPNAVINST 6110.1K), U.S. Air Force (DAFMAN 36-2905), and U.S. Marine Corps (MCO 6110.3A)—maintain rigorous physical fitness and body composition requirements designed to ensure operational readiness and physical resilience.

The military body composition assessment is a multi-stage process. First, service members are weighed against standard screening tables. If a member exceeds the weight threshold, modern DoD protocol initiates the Waist-to-Height Ratio (WHtR) preliminary screen before subjecting the individual to circumference taping.

The 2026 Waist-to-Height Ratio (WHtR) Screening Protocol

Adopted by the Army and expanding across the joint force, WHtR serves as an objective, non-invasive screening metric:

WHtR = Waist Circumference (inches) / Standing Height (inches)
  • Pass Threshold (≤ 0.53): Any soldier whose waist circumference is 53% or less of their standing height receives an immediate pass, irrespective of screening table weight or muscle mass.
  • Borderline (0.54 – 0.55): Requires full circumference tape testing under branch-specific equations.
  • Exceeds Threshold (> 0.55): Secondary tape testing mandatory; potential entry into body composition remedial monitoring if circumference taping fails.

Maximum Allowable Body Fat Ceilings by Service Branch

Service members undergoing circumference taping must test at or below the following maximum allowable body fat percentages:

Official Circumference Taping Guidelines

  1. Tape Calibration: Use an auto-tensioning, non-stretch fiberglass tape measure calibrated in quarter-inch increments.
  2. Neck Placement: Position the tape directly inferior to the thyroid cartilage (larynx) without constricting skin.
  3. Abdomen / Waist Placement: Wrap tape horizontally around the torso at the level of the navel (iliac crest for women), parallel to the deck, at the end of normal expiration.
  4. Three-Trial Average: Official regulations require three sequential measurements rounded to the nearest half-inch, averaged to compute final compliance.
